Throughout my adult life, I have lived by a mantra my mother taught me that "Life is what happens, while you are busy making plans." This book goes by the same mantra. All the while you are living life you are not expecting things that pop up whether they are good or bad. Sometimes it takes the bad to bring your life into full focus and for you to live it fully. Sometimes the bad can set into motion all the good in your life, too. The author does a great job showing both sides of these ideas. A lot can happen in 35+ years and the author shows you how the dynamics of a family can change in an instant. It's a good read. Ed Stuteville’s second book, “Forever and for Always”, is now available on bookstore shelves and as a download for various e-readers. I was fortunate enough to be able to read an advanced copy and I wasn’t disappointed. In Stuteville’s sophomore effort he continues to build his own style and expand his storytelling and character development abilities.
The story is told as a sequence of first person reflections of the seminal events in the lives of the main characters. Similar to Stuteville’s previous efforts, the protagonist is portrayed as the everyman. Jeff Long is an average Joe whose experiences, trials, and joys are instantly identifiable and relevant to the modern reader. Through the story, Long transitions from a fairly reasonable man confronted with several life situations to an aging, willing patient of a nursing home due to his physical and mental deterioration. Divorce, teenage children, a new love interest, re-marriage, a new wife, breast cancer, death, and bi-polar disorder, all combine to alter who he is and how he reacts to the world around him.
Long doesn’t really change his core being during his life span. It seems more that his own choices and the unexpected nature of like preferentially feed the dark side of his psyche until the light is forced to live in shadow. Through the author’s use of multiple viewpoints, the reader can see and understand the paths taken. The choices made by the characters may not always be perfect, but they are the same decisions that the reader might take in the same situation. Allowing the reader to walk in the shoes of several characters gives the story an intricacy and texture that makes it much more than just the story of a bitter widower. It is an interwoven tapestry of a family; happiness, pain, frustration, sadness, joy, understanding, and love.
The style is easy to read and the characters are rich and complex. The maturity that Stuteville shows in his second novel is very promising. If he continues to grow like this, he will soon become a literary force to be reckoned with. His third novel is nearing completion and is due out in late 2014. This next novel adds a bit of mystery and a peak into the private side of the public faces that small-town charaters can portray. A teaser is included with “Forever and for Always”. I can’t wait!
Forever and Always is a real-life type of romance with all the problems that all real life romances have.
Written in first-person point-of-view from four different perspectives, it appears that the story will become a tangle of opinions and emotions, but that’s far from the truth. Mr. Stuteville coordinates the voices well and the story is seamless in its telling. Each narrator tells their part of the story as it affects them and the parts add up well.
I was taken with the portrayal of mental illness and its effects on the characters. The entire family suffers and the author has communicated this extremely well.
Jeff bluntness is quite refreshing in the novel. His first admission of “I am not a great man” tells so much when in fact we only scratch the surface. It takes fifty years to find the real Jeff.
Forever and Always is a good choice for those looking for a sentimental love story to remind them of their own.
It's like looking at real places & people that I know. . We all need something to ground us. .
This is a well written book that will hold the reader's interest, dealing with many problems that occur in today's family lives. Truly a unique love story. One that you will enjoy.

Ed the books are very well written and you have put your heart and soul into them. I was very impressed how you were able to articulate your emotions towards these stories. The story covers a long time span very quickly and the time line is maintained well. A story of sadness and personal struggles for the main character. Dynamics of a family dealing with death on their own terms and finding comfort in the end.
