Will love set them free—or seal their fate?
In the sixty-seventh century, Trev, a master thief and computer hacker, and Khim, a vat-grown human android, reluctantly share a cell in a floating space prison called Steering Star. Trev is there as part of an arrangement that might finally free him from his father’s control. Khim, formerly a combat android, snaps when he is sold into the pleasure trade and murders one of the men who sexually assaults him. At first they are at odds, but despite secrets and their dark pasts, they form a pact—first to survive the prison, and then to escape it.
But independence remains elusive, and falling in love comes with its own challenges. Trev’s father, Dante, a powerful underworld figure with sweeping influence throughout the galaxy, maintains control over their lives that seems stronger than any prison security system, and he seeks to keep them apart. Trev and Khim must plan another, more complex escape, and this time make sure they are well beyond the law as well as Dante’s reach.

In this world, androids are not machines, they are actually flesh and blood: "vat-grown humans" manufactured as an fully formed adult with fake memories. But as an android, they are still considered property, still don't have full rights as other humans. So, they have the full range of humans but can be subjected to extreme conditions. So what happens when an android trained to be a combat solider is injured, then auctioned off so the military can earn some money on a "broken" asset? What happens when that android is then sold as a sex toy, drugged, gang raped, then uses his skills as a combat soldier to defend himself? Then sentenced to prison where any act of violence would mean immediate death, reducing your ability to defend yourself? And forced to share a prison cell with a member of the powerful family that bought you to be a sex slave so you could be legally raped at their brothel?Product details

The Android and the Thief edition by Wendy Rathbone Romance eBooks Reviews
The Place a future world in the sixty-seventh century. Trev is the adopted son of a notorious “gangster” of this world and the acrobatic thief who steals for him. Trev is dreaming of a future where he is free to do what he wants and NOT what his demanding father wants. Khim is a vat-grown human which everyone in this future world calls Android. Through some disturbing machinations Trev and Khim meet in prison, become friends and hatch an escape plan. They both desire freedom, Trev from his father’s influence and Khim from a world that only sees him as a slave. They do get their HEA and become lovers. My only critique of this book is that it is way better than your average book in this genre. Ms. Rathbone is a highly skilled writer and makes you feel what the characters are going through. At one point I got so angry at what was happening I wanted to hit something. Although it has several hot sexy scenes, it took to about chapter 22 for the first one. Ms. Rathbone doesn’t rely on sex to sell her story. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

Book Review
Impressions
This love story reminds me of how even hidden emotional triggers cannot impede the building of strong bonds of acceptance and respect between two warriors. In this reading love becomes unshakable (my favorite premise). Their struggles for freedom for starkly different reasons held my interest. In passages of lyrical prose, I found the relating masterful. The author created characters with innate differences in background and learned responses to the inevitable struggles for freedom.
The thought sharing of the often-silent warrior Khim’s comes to the reader in a poetic style that captures his most hidden emotional struggles. I could feel the love bond forming between these two unlikely characters in spite of their hidden poetic souls and durable codes of honor seemingly out of place in their universe. Yet both rely on the emotional triggers formed early that surprisingly become an unlikely path to love.
For the spirit, emotional triggers serve to comfort and shelter or signal danger. The character Khim is perhaps my favorite because he innately knows how to protect his unspoken needs while shielding unused emotions. Instinct led him to preserve, and submerge his feelings in order to survive….to accept. Unlike the man, he comes to trust and love.
“I am thoughts. Such as Is this all my life will ever be? And will I feel my death in my head or my heart?”…Khim
The thief Trevor Damico’s emotional triggers are different. He is accustomed to immense liberties because of wealth, status, and brilliance of intellect. But he also has a moral compass absent from his upbringing. He comes to understand that acquiring freedom from his father must be at any cost. To me, his individual bravery is revealed in his curiosity and acceptance of others. Sheltered and distrustful from childhood – he must learn to become part of humanity.
I like the way the author’s converging storylines brings the two men together. A bond of friendship for the sake of survival between two brave poetic warriors becomes love. I recollect the Samurai code of honor and “The Beautiful Way”.
Homoerotic poems and stories by Kobo Daishi about “The Beautiful Way” of the Samurai spoke lyrically of a world of warrior lovers. Strongly crafted prose not only explored the science of war but also told of love bonds. Bonds so strong that not even death on the battlefield separated them. Many warrior lovers finding bonded mates fallen in battle chose to join them in death by the Katana or by way of seppuku (suicide). Khim and Trev form such a bond.
Story/Plot/Conflict
In our far distant and very different future, there still lies corruption powered by extreme wealth absent moral compasses. It reigns supreme. In this world led by a powerful man that uses his children to maintain his empire we find his youngest and most gifted. Trevor is a supreme thief that has come to realize he will do anything to escape his father’s world – even if it means going to prison. His father is omnipotent and best laid plans – sometimes have a few twist and turns. Trevor’s universe is filled with surprises. He meets a vat (artificially) grown human warrior that many call “androids”.
Khim has spent his entire life as a fighter. Trained by the military to respond unquestioningly to human commands he faces a starkly new reality after being injured. Sold by the military his beauty elicits the horror to perform unspeakable acts of sexual bondage. He must learn quickly new skills for survival while still honing his newly discovered need for independence and a life led by ethical conscious.
Main Characterizations
Trevor Damico an amazing beautiful agile thief and all around tech genius has only one desire, freedom from his father and head of a powerful syndicate Dante Damico. But one powerful thing changes everything….a love for a vat created human warrior.
Khim 18367 is the android warrior meant to fight wars until he dies on the battlefield. Circumstances bring him to a surprising turn in his life where he comes to trust and possess the love of his owner.
Critiques
This is a very enjoyable seductive read. Author Wendy Rathbone is truly gifted in weaving this thought-filled tale of true love. This is a good and must read for science fiction devotes.
Genre
LGBTQ m/m Sci-Fi fantasy
This book left me with so much emotion. How odd that weeks prior to reading this book I came across solders male and female that were violated like the main character. It left me heart broken but it also gave me hope about staring a new.
4.5 stars. I really liked the MCs and how their romance developed. I liked how they complemented each other and how they learned to rely on each other in very tough circumstances. The ending was a bit of a HFN, but one could assume a HEA too (I don't want to give spoilers on why I think this -- just read it -- you'll see what I mean). This is my first book by Rathbone and I'll definitely keep my eye out for more.
